What Does It Mean To Get "Saved"?
Is there a list of things you can do, so you can have access to heaven? "Things you can do" and "things you cannot do"
Or do you think your religion or church denomination can be a good help to achieve those requirements?
Well, may be some people believe it is possible though the remarkable evil that increases in the midst of the religious community. What is really the meaning of getting saved?
1I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, 2That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.3For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:4Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;5Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.6Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:7Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.8That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.9For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son.10And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;11(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)12It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.14What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. 15For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.16So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. 17For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.18Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. 19Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? 20Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? 21Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? 22What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
24Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? 25As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. 26And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. 27Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: 28For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. 29And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. 30What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.31But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. 32Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; 33As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
The Bible says prior to salvation, all people are dead in sin-- spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1-3;
2 Timothy 1:9). In this state of death, the sinner is utterly unable to respond to any spiritual stimulus and therefore unable to love God, obey Him, or please Him in any way.
Remember earlier, about the case of Jacob and Esau, we learned: “11(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) 12It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.”
1Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.3And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;4And patience, experience; and experience, hope:5And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.6For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.7For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.8But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.9Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.10For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.11And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.Romans 5:1-11
12Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.15But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.16And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.17For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.19For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.20Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.Romans 5:12-21
Yes, in Adam our soul is dead, with a corrupted body subject to eternal death: Are we sons and daughters of Adam? If yes, can we become saved on our good works? This is what the Bible says about our nature:
3The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.Psalm 58:3
This is our natural condition even before we born. Everybody was in the loins of Adam when he disobeyed God. Like Hebrew 7, verses 9-10 says about Levi who paid tithes through Abraham: “And as I may so say, Levi also, who received tithes, paid tithes in Abraham. For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.
I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “Thou shalt not covet".
8But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.” Romans 7:7-8
That's why the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives.
11For there is no respect of persons with God. 12For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 13(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.14For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) 16In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. Romans 2:11-16
A better understanding from Adam’s nature to Christ’s new creature can also be understood in the book of Romans chapter 7.
Released From the Law Bound to Christ
14For we know that the law
is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15For that which I do I
allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. 16If then I do that which
I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. 17Now then it is no more I
that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18For I know that in me
(that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me;
but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19For the good that I
would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20Now if I do that I would
not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 21I find then a law, that,
when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22For I delight in the law
of God after the inward man: 23But I see another law in
my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity
to the law of sin which is in my members. 24O wretched man that I
am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25
I thank God through
Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but
with the flesh the law of sin.
Also verse 18 says: 18For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing”.
The truth in all this is that no sinner can ever make the first move in the salvation process. Is it truly possible that a person, without Christ, do good works? Does not the Bible say we are unrighteous?
10As it is written, There
is none righteous, no, not one: 11There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12They are all gone out of
the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good,
no, not one. 13Their throat is an open
sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is
under their lips: 14Whose mouth is full of
cursing and bitterness: 15Their feet are swift to
shed blood: 16Destruction and misery
are in their ways: 17And the way of peace
have they not known: 18There is no fear of God
before their eyes. 19Now we know that what
things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every
mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20Therefore by the deeds
of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is
the knowledge of sin. 21But now the
righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law
and the prophets; 22Even the righteousness
of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that
believe: for there is no difference: 23For all have sinned, and
come short of the glory of God; 24Being justified freely
by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
our state of spiritual death and total hopelessness, we understanding why Jesus
says: “ 44No man can come to
me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at
the last day.” John 6:44
